Local SEO: How to Get Found on Google in Your City

Almost every search for a service now includes a place – or Google adds one automatically based on location. The first three results in the map box (the "Local Pack") receive the lion's share of clicks and calls. Local SEO is the craft of getting into exactly that box.
The good news: unlike nationwide SEO, you only compete locally with businesses from your region – and many of them do nothing for their visibility. Solid work wins a lot here, fast.
The three pillars of local ranking
- Relevance: do your profile and website match the search? (categories, services, copy)
- Distance: how close is your business to the searcher or the searched place?
- Prominence: reviews, mentions, links – how present is your business online?

Pillar 1: Optimise your Google Business Profile
The Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the biggest lever for the map box: fill in every field, pick the right primary category, list all services, upload real photos regularly and collect reviews actively – and reply to them. Our separate article on the Google Business Profile covers the details.
Pillar 2: Local signals on your website
- City + service in the page title and main heading ("Drywall in Bingen")
- Name your service area clearly: which cities and districts do you serve?
- Address and phone number identical to your Google profile (NAP consistency)
- LocalBusiness schema: structured data that tells Google your location unambiguously
- A dedicated page per important city if you serve several – with real content, not copies

Pillar 3: Reviews and local mentions
Reviews are the most visible ranking factor: count, average, recency – and whether you reply. Ask satisfied customers for a Google review right after the job, most easily via a WhatsApp link. Add listings in relevant directories with exactly the same contact details.
Local SEO is not a one-off project but a routine: monthly photos, posts and reviews, quarterly content checks. Done consistently, many businesses reach the map box within a few months – we handle this as part of our SEO package.
Frequently asked questions
How long until local SEO shows results?
First improvements in map rankings often appear after 4–8 weeks; stable top positions take 3–6 months depending on competition.
Do I need a separate page for every city?
Only for places that really matter to you – and only with genuinely unique content. Ten copied "city pages" with swapped town names do more harm than good.
Does local SEO work without a storefront?
Yes. As a service provider without walk-in customers you hide the address in your profile and define a service area instead – everything else works the same.
